Pleasure Point Addition - Custom Architecture In Progress

Pleasure Point Addition

Santa Cruz, CA

A seamless addition to an existing 650-square-foot surf shack located just steps to the beach in the vibrant Pleasure Point neighborhood. This coastal residential remodel demonstrates our expertise in navigating complex coastal zoning regulations and stringent setbacks.

The site presented a difficult stormwater situation, sloping from front to back with existing non-compliant sump pumps previously diverting water to the street. To resolve this, the design introduces an above-ground rainwater catchment tank. This system is legally allowed to overflow back to the street, elegantly solving the challenging stormwater diversion conditions while improving the property's ecological footprint.

Aesthetically, the project thoughtfully blends a modern addition with the original surf shack's architectural vernacular, honoring the residential scale of the Santa Cruz neighborhood. By utilizing durable, marine-grade materials and strategic site orientation, the design ensures long-term resilience against the harsh coastal environment.

Ultimately, the design introduces modernized, light-filled interiors that open up to the natural surroundings, creating a fluid connection between indoor and outdoor coastal living.
